MYSTERY QUILT CONTINUES! Part II
Hopefully you have started your mystery quilt! If so, you know that it is a really easy quilt to make! By now, you should have 16 finished blocks which look a lot like the beginning of a log cabin quilt. But, guess what, it is not! There is no need to bother about where light and dark fabrics go in the block. I think you remember that each one of the 16 blocks should be exactly alike! This is most crucial to achieve the pattern for the finished quilt. Do not mix up the fabrics. Each fabric must be in the same "log" where you had it in the first block!
Now, this next block does not take a rocket scientist to put it together! However, you remember that I told you that you must not use the same fabrics for the next two blocks that you used in the first block! If you should do so, the design will be lost in the quilt. So, return to your favorite quilt shop and purchase three fabrics which will look great with Block #1 (coordinating colors) They may be stripes, f1orals, or print on print, but I recommend that they NOT be solids. You might go with the old adage in quilting: get a light, medium, and medium dark fabric. Save the really dark fabric for Block #3. That will be next month's project. Make SIXTEEN of Block #2. Make them ALL ALIKE! Don't mix up the fabrics!
Don't get behind. It's more fun if you do it as you get the patterns! Remember to enlarge this pattern to the size block you chose for your quilt. If it is an 8" block, you shall need a HALF YARD of THREE different fabrics; for 12" block, at least three-fourths of a yard. I always add a little bit, to be sure that I have enough to paper-piece my blocks. You know that paper-piecing requires a little more fabric than traditional piecing. But the result is so much more exact.
Note pattern below does not print to size. To paper piece, you must draw your own pattern using the sizes below. Remember to add 1/4" seam allowance to all pattern pieces. Finish block will be 8" square (not including 1/4" seam allowances).
