BEGINNING OF THE SUMMER MYSTERY QUILT
There are only 3 main block patterns, but oh, the fun you'll have putting them together! Each block may be paper-pieced or traditionally pieced if you'll add a quarter inch seam allowance to pattern pieces. You may enlarge patterns for a 6" block which will make a 48" square quilt without borders; or an 8" block will make a 64" square quilt without borders; or a 12" block will make a 96" square quilt without borders. Paper-piecing is so exact, and SO easy! There are wonderful "how to" books at the Cashiers Library, or on the Internet, just search for "How to Paper-piece." Just be sure to have AT LEAST a quarter inch seam allowance left all around the outside of the block to join to the next block.
This may be a scrap quilt or if choosing the beautiful new florals, etc. available, choose 3 or 4 fabrics for making Block 1. You'll make 16 blocks ALL JUST ALIKE using the pattern given today. I'm giving yardages for using the 8" blocks to make the 16 blocks. For patch #1, one-eighth of a yd. Patches #2 and #3, three-eighths of a yd. Patches #4 and #5, three eights of a yd. Patches #6 and #7, one-half yd.
You won't repeat these fabrics. The next two blocks will need completely different fabrics. Oh, what fun going to the quilt store for fabrics!
The pattern below will not print to size so if you want to paper piece then use the diagram below to draw your own pattern to size. Remember the blocks finished will be 8" square (Does not include seam allowances). Add an 1/4" seam allowance to all pattern pieces.
